What is Beer Saver?

Beer lines are normally cleaned on a weekly basis, this is to remove any bacterial build up and yeast build up in the lines that naturally occurs over time. If lines are not regularly cleaned the draught products (Ales, Lagers and Ciders) become spoiled and taste bad. Bad beer is bad for business so good operators keep their lines clean.

However, cleaning beer lines on a weekly basis has many drawbacks. To clean the lines, you first must remove the draught product from the line and replace it with cleaning chemicals. This product is lost and poured down the drain. The average pub throws away 15 kegs of product per annum in this way. This has a massive operational and environmental cost. Beer is food, and food wastage is very bad for the environment and the bottom line.

In addition, time spent on labour is required normally at a cost and harsh chemicals are also used and then poured away down the drain further damaging the environment.

Beer Saver has been using its technology for the last 20 years to inhibit the growth of bacteria and yeast. This means that less lines cleans are required throughout the year saving the business both time and money.

We have significantly upgraded the technology during 2020-21 lockdown, this was the one benefit that covid provided in that it created a bit of space for us to think about our position in the market and with our competitors. We’d noticed that over the years Heineken were developing and improving the SMART dispenses system and Carlsberg were hot on our tail with the Carlsberg Quality Dispense system. And as both these systems supported a 4-week clean cycle they were starting to make an impact on our 6-week clean cycle dominant market position.

As result we went back to the drawing board with Beer Saver and developed Beer Saver 6 Plus and Beer Saver 7 Pro. With Beer Saver 6 Plus we have been able to increase the line clean cycles to a minimum of 6 weeks which is phenomenal! Beer Saver 7 Pro goes even further with a minimum of 12 weeks in between clean cycles which is just brilliant!

Beer Saver 7 Pro also comes with the following
additional features:

  • Cellar temperature monitoring
  • Line temperature monitoring.
  • Line Cleaning frequency monitoring.
  • Cellar door monitor
  • Wi-Fi Connectivity
  • System self-diagnostic check to ensure the antimicrobial inhibitors are functioning correctly.
  • The ability to add on an additional 160 sensors.
  • 7-inch touch screen display.

As with the previous models all our systems are backed up with scientific study, currently Dr David Quain formerly Professor David Quain of Nottingham Universities International Centre for Brewing Science. And formerly Professor at The International Centre for Brewing & Distilling at Heriot-Watt University, is completing the current paper on the efficacy and effects on beer quality. We are currently showing that at week 14 on our test sites the beer quality is excellent. There are more test papers available on our website at
https://www.beer-saver.co.uk/science-centre.

And that leads to the main benefits of the systems.

Savings
First and foremost are the savings, by reducing the frequency of line cleans we are reducing the amount of beer wastage associated with those cleans, reducing associated labour savings and chemical costs. These savings are approximately 92%, based on a 12 – week cycle where the site would have been completing 52 cleans per annum without the technology and are instead now completing just 4. The average public houses waste 56 pints across 8 products and split lines. With the system installed the overall savings are £75,000 over 5 years for the average site.

Reduced Drip Tray Wastage
Drip tray wastage mainly caused by excessively fobbing beer is a direct result of dirty beer lines. Toxins released by the bacteria react with the CO2 and lead to fobbing. Drip tray wastage can account for up to 15% of every pint poured which is 13.2 pints of every standard 50l keg. The Beer Saver technology will 100% eliminate beer fobbing and further improve GP and reduce beer wastage. Reduced drip tray wastage is an additional savings on top of the average sites saving of £75,000 over 5 years.

Beer Quality
Clean beer lines mean clear crisp pints with heads that cling to the glass every time (decent glassware permitting). The Beer Saver technology guarantees the perfect pint every time, helping to drive sales revenue through quality. The technology has also been shown to improve the shelf life of keg and cask products. We have seen across the board an increase in sales where the technology has been installed, we strongly believe that our technology encourages the 2nd serve. Equally as important, it ensures that bad beer doesn’t result in the loss of repeat business.

Sustainability
Beer is classed as food and food wastage is high on the global environmental agenda, with the technology installed the average site will improve its sustainability credentials with the following savings –

0.7 CO2 footprint reduction per annum.
53,387 gallons of Water footprint reduction per annum. (It takes roughly 20 gallons of water to make one pint
of beer).

Included in the package would be our line cleaning service where our experienced technicians (you) are on 24/7 callout for any beer quality issues – there won’t be any, however our customers have got the peace of mind of knowing we will always be onsite within a few hours if needed.

By completing the line cleans it also means that our technicians are regularly in the cellars and become very familiar with the client’s infrastructure. During these cleans a full cellar survey is completed as standard, checking condition of equipment, temperature, and stock rotation. Any issues are fed back immediately meaning they can be rectified before they affect service and the customer experience.

This is an industry leading product and service that generates regular income from both line cleaning contracts and Beer Saver technology rental.

Our existing clients include Shipyard Brewery (11 years), Marriott International (9 years and preferred supplier), Liverpool Football Club (5 years), LGH Management (3 years across the entire portfolio of Holiday Inns, Crown Plaza’s, and Best Westerns), over 1000 independent hotels, restaurants, and public houses. More information on some of our clients can be found in the testimonial and case studies section.

Satisfied Customers

“The Shipyard Brewing Company has been using the Beer Saver USA system at our original brew pub in Kennebunk Maine for over four years. The system reduces the need for manual chemical cleanings and the beer loss that goes with it. The system also has a significant positive impact on the environment by reducing beer and water waste. We recommend the system for serving all of our draft beers. As with any industry when you reduce the cost of quality you make it easier to increase the quality. We hope our customers take advantage of the benefits the system has to offer.”
Fred Forsley Owner Shipyard Brewing Company

“My priority is the quality of the beer and Beer Saver has a massive impact on improving the quality and consistency across all the bars. It tastes fresh and doesn’t go bitter. My second priority is waste. Each line clean we waste over 1500 pints across the stadium, at £4.50 a pint retail. Over the season that’s a lot of beer that is sold to fans that would otherwise have been wasted and really does help with our GP targets.”
Phil Egan– Head of Stores, Liverpool F.C

“The Beer Saver system has helped me maintain the highest standards of beer quality possible whilst minimising my wastage, its win win. This has been particularly important to me as I take great pride in serving the perfect pint and I have found the system makes each pint always taste just as the lines have been cleaned.”
Mike Wilkinson, Bar Manager at The Cricketers

“Our cellars are led by people like Mike who are really passionate about the beer, they are the bastions of good taste. As a company we really focus on wastage, making sure that the business converts to the bottom line. We are very conscious about improvement and our new till system makes it very easy to track wastage.”
Chris Gilmore Area Manager at Barons Pubs

“I have been very pleased with what Beer Saver have done for us at the hotel. In the few months the system has been installed we have seen improvement in the beer quality, and savings from less wastage and labour efficiencies from less beer line cleaning requirement. The support from Beer Saver has been excellent and the ease of use of the system has been great for the team. All in all, a positive experience with positive results.”
Ajith Kuriakose – GM Marriott, Gosforth Park
